About Facelifts
A facelift, or a rhytidectomy, is a facial rejuvenation procedure that tightens, lifts, and repositions your facial fat, soft tissues, skin, and muscles. (1)
Over time, several internal changes and external factors, such as aging or ultraviolet radiation, can affect the appearance and composition of your facial skin and tissues. Your skin can develop wrinkles and creases, your soft tissues and fat can start to descend, and your facial muscles can become weak and lax. While these effects are naturally occurring, they can create a constantly tired or weathered appearance. With a facelift, you can address each of these concerns and restore an appearance that feels more true and authentic to you.
Available Types of Facelift
Dr. Chang offers several different types of facelifting procedures. Each provides its own stunning results and corrects different concerns in varying regions of the face. During your personal consultation, Dr. Chang will determine which facelift variation will be the most effective for you.
Deep Plane Facelifts
A deep plane facelift is a variation of the traditional facelift that can address the deeper, underlying layers of your facial tissue to improve the appearance of and rejuvenate the midface and lower face. This approach lifts the SMAS layer of tissue, the composite skin, and the fascia beneath it as one unit, resulting in smoother, more natural-looking results. (2)
Endoscopic Brow Lift
The endoscopic brow lift is a surgical procedure that can address visible aging concerns in the upper third of the face. (3) Dr. Chang is one of only a few surgeons in the area to offer this technique. This method uses endoscopic tools, which are specialized surgical instruments connected to thin tubes. These tools make the surgery minimally invasive and “scarless.” Because the incisions are significantly smaller and hide in the hairline and behind the ear, Dr. Chang can release and lift your underlying facial tissues and muscles, leaving you looking more well-rested and relaxed through much smaller access points.
Endoscopic Midface Lift
The endoscopic midface lift uses endoscopic tools to correct concerns affecting your cheeks, cheekbones, and nasolabial area in a minimally invasive, “scarless” manner. (4) Dr. Chang can use these tools to reposition your malar fat and elevate your midfacial tissues to restore a more contoured and youthful look.
Endoscopic Lower Facelift
The endoscopic lower facelift is a unique procedure that few surgeons in the country offer. This facelift variation uses endoscopic tools to not only lift and tighten the superficial tissues and structures in the lower third of your face, but also the deeper, underlying ones. Dr. Chang can perform this procedure to address areas such as the jawline, chin, and neck without creating significant scarring, as it can correct concerns such as jowling, deepening marionette lines, or an overall loss of youthful facial aesthetics.
Facial Fat Grafting
In many facelift cases, Dr. Chang incorporates facial fat grafting. This technique harvests fat from another donor site on the body, usually the arms, thighs, abdomen, or flanks, processes it to a pure state, and then carefully replaces it in the face. Dr. Chang often uses nanofat, the most refined and smallest particle size that is rich in stem cells and growth factors, to enhance the glow of the skin. Or, he will use micro or mili (medium-sized and largest particles, respectively) to optimize structural enhancements. In all cases, Dr. Chang uses extreme precision to carefully, evenly layer fat to deliver ideal results.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your facelift, you will need to abide by a few key preparations. Dr. Chang may direct you to:
- Avoid Certain Medications: Unless medically necessary, stop consuming any blood-thinning medications or supplements.
- Prepare Time Away: Take a step back from your personal and professional responsibilities to focus on your recovery.
- Arrange Transportation Home: Have a trusted friend or family member drive you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to do so yourself.
- Obtain Your Medications: Fill any prescriptions you may need for your recovery ahead of time.
- Cease Your Substance Use: Stop consuming any nicotine or alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure, and maintain your abstinence in the weeks following.
Dr. Chang believes that the best way to optimize results is by starting with good health and an active lifestyle and sustaining these changes post-operatively. You should be maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and getting regular exercise both entering your procedure and as soon as you are able to after your recovery. Dr. Chang may also recommend undergoing additional treatments for your benefit, such as LED light therapies or oxygen treatments. Even though Dr. Chang is only addressing facial concerns, it is still crucial that you take care of your body and health as a whole.
Procedure
Dr. Chang will perform your facelift on an outpatient basis at his surgical center. He will first meet with you to reconfirm each detail before cleansing your skin. You will then receive anesthesia.
Dr. Chang will place an incision around the ears to access your underlying facial tissues and structures. He will hide the incisions within your hairline to naturally conceal them as they fade into invisibility. Through these incisions, he will perform each of your desired corrections. They will vary depending on the type of facelift you receive and the severity of your concerns, but you can expect him to remove your excess skin and tissue, tighten any lax muscles, and remove or reposition your facial fat. After addressing structural concerns and excising redundant tissue, Dr. Chang will place new fat to rejuvenate skin texture and volume, if necessary.
Once Dr. Chang has performed each of your desired corrections, he will carefully suture each incision and allow you to rest.
Recovery
Recovering from a facelift is a process that takes time and care. Throughout your initial recovery phase, it is common to experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness. These effects will dissipate on their own, but you may additionally manage them with prescribed medications, a cold compress, and resting with your head elevated.
You may return to your career and lighter activities after approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to continue refraining from anything strenuous or arduous until Dr. Chang has cleared you to return. He may also recommend certain post-operative treatments to promote a quicker recovery, such as LED red light therapy or oxygen treatments.
Dr. Chang will provide you with a full set of written instructions when he meets with you in-person. By following each one, you can ensure a quicker, safer return to your routine.
Results
The results of your facelift will become more apparent as any residual swelling subsides. They will vary depending on the type of facelift you undergo, but you can expect to experience tighter and smoother skin, more rejuvenated facial contours, improved proportions, and elevated facial symmetry—all of which can restore a more youthful-looking appearance.
Facelift procedures yield long-lasting results, with effects that you can enjoy for up to a decade. To best preserve them, Dr. Chang recommends making healthy lifestyle choices. These include regularly exercising, eating healthily, or potentially taking peptides.
