About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure wherein Dr. Chang elevates the shape, size, structure, and symmetry of the nose to improve its overall appearance. Many patients undergo this procedure to address various aesthetic concerns, but Dr. Chang may also perform it to address functional concerns such as nasal blockage, breathing concerns, and other airway obstructions.

Types of Rhinoplasties

Dr. Chang can perform two different types of rhinoplasty, depending on the target concerns. These are the open rhinoplasty approach and the closed rhinoplasty approach. (2) During your personal consultation, he will determine which one is more appropriate for your desired corrections.

  • Open Rhinoplasty: The open rhinoplasty approach consists of Dr. Chang placing an incision across the columella, or the flesh that lies between both of your nostrils. This approach provides greater visualization and is often used for more extensive reshaping or corrections. (1)
  • Closed Rhinoplasty: A closed rhinoplasty approach, or an endonasal rhinoplasty, consists of Dr. Chang placing each incision in the nasal cavities. This approach is ideal when modifying the upper third portion of the nose while avoiding the appearance of external scarring. (1)

Benefits

Rhinoplasties offer numerous benefits, especially when an accomplished plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Chang, performs the procedure. They include:

  • Resculpted Contours: A rhinoplasty can address aesthetic concerns across several areas of the nose, including the nasal tip, dorsal hump, alar base, and more, allowing you to achieve a more refined appearance that flatters your facial sculpt.
  • Improved Functionality: Dr. Chang can address nasal blockages, structural irregularities, and congenital deformities to help you restore your natural breathing abilities.
  • Personalized Treatment Plans: Dr. Chang tailors each treatment plan according to your needs and anatomy to help you achieve each of your goals.
  • Lasting Results: Rhinoplasties offer permanent results, making them a worthwhile investment for many patients.
  • Elevated Confidence: Resolving your nasal concerns may lead to a greater sense of self-confidence overall.

Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for a rhinoplasty procedure if you have found yourself discontent with the appearance of your nose, especially as a result of irregularities in shape, size, and symmetry. You may also benefit from this procedure if you are experiencing difficulties breathing due to structural irregularities, congenital deformities, or other nasal blockages.

Patients who want to undergo a rhinoplasty procedure must be in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding their outcomes. They should also lead a nicotine-free lifestyle or be willing to quit smoking. Dr. Chang will assess each individual’s candidacy during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

The first step in your rhinoplasty journey is attending a personal consultation at our Miami office. During this visit, Dr. Chang will meet with you individually to establish a more meaningful relationship and learn more about what brings you in. He will review your medical history, converse about your nasal concerns, discuss your desired results, and perform a physical examination.

Using this information, he will finalize your candidacy and design a treatment plan exclusive to you. He will determine the best rhinoplasty techniques for your needs and may suggest additional procedures, depending on your goals. He will also answer any questions you have.

Preparation

Once you schedule your procedure with the OC Plastic Surgery team, they will provide you with a written set of directions to help you prepare. These may vary depending on the details of your treatment plan, but they typically include:

  • Altering Your Medications: Avoid taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties.
  • Coordinating Transportation: Have a trusted friend or relative drive you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
  • Arranging Time Away: Prepare to take time away from work, your personal responsibilities, and any other social activities you participate in.
  • Running Errands: Fill any prescriptions you will need for your recovery, and ensure you have prepared your home.
  • Abstaining From Substances: Refrain from consuming any alcohol or nicotine in the weeks leading up to your procedure, and maintain your cessation until you have fully recovered.

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, a member of the OC Plastic Surgery team will lead you to a private treatment room where you will meet with Dr. Chang one last time. He will address any remaining questions you have about your procedure before cleansing your skin and transporting you to the operating room. You will then receive general anesthesia to keep you comfortably asleep throughout your entire procedure.

Dr. Chang will meticulously place incisions either between your nostrils or inside your nasal cavities, depending on the type of rhinoplasty he is performing. Through these incisions, he will proceed to make each of your corrections. They may include reshaping or repositioning your cartilaginous structures, addressing the bony vault, creating and placing cartilage grafts, refining the nasal tip, and more. When possible, Dr. Chang will also perform the dorsal preservation technique. This is a specialized technique that gently modifies your nasal shape through endonasal incisions in a manner that maintains the organic structures and foundations of your nose. It minimizes damage and ensures lasting results with proper function.

Once he has achieved your desired appearance, he will carefully examine the treated areas to ensure your nose appears symmetrical and harmonious. You will then rest under the care of the OC Plastic Surgery team in our recovery suite.

Recovery

Dr. Chang performs each rhinoplasty procedure on an outpatient basis, which means that he will release you from his care on the same day as he performs your procedure. Upon your release, he will provide you with a personalized aftercare package that details how to care for yourself as you heal.

You can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, and general discomfort around the treated areas. These effects will dissipate over time, but you can manage them using prescribed medications and resting with your head elevated. Dr. Chang will also send you home in a nasal splint, which will further mitigate these effects and maintain the new structure of your nose as your tissues begin to settle.

After one week, Dr. Chang will have you return for a follow-up appointment so he can remove your splint and assess your nose. After one to two weeks, you will be able to return to most of your routine activities, although you will need to continue avoiding any strenuous or demanding tasks.

Results

Once your swelling has subsided, you will be able to see the full results of your rhinoplasty procedure. While these results will vary, you can expect a straighter, more symmetrical, and proportionate nose that elevates your natural facial structure. If you receive functional corrections, you will also find it easier to breathe.

Cost of Rhinoplasty in Miami, Florida

Dr. Chang personalizes each procedure according to the nasal structure, goals, and needs of each of his patients, which means the pricing of your rhinoplasty will vary. Once he has met with you to discuss and establish each detail of your treatment plan, he will provide you with a comprehensive cost estimate.

OC Plastic Surgery additionally offers financing for those who are interested.
