About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation involves enhancing the shape, size, and placement of the breasts. It is a safe, satisfying procedure that increases breast size. It can restore lost volume, improve shape and overall proportions, and rejuvenate chest appearance. After this procedure, many patients feel better about their body and more confident.
Breast augmentation is highly customizable with many options to achieve elegant, natural-looking results. Options include saline and silicone implants with various textures and sizes, fat transfers, and multiple implantation placements and incision techniques.(2) Dr. Chang will guide you through the options during your consultation. His expertise and patient-centered care will ensure you understand all the possibilities and customize your treatment plan to attain exquisite results.
Implants vs. Fat Transfer
There are two ways to increase breast size. Fat transfers offer a soft, natural look with changes of up to a cup size. During a fat transfer, fat is harvested from other parts of the body with liposuction, sterilized, and then reinjected into the chest. This creates a dual benefit of contouring one body area while enhancing another, and there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction, as the filler medium comes from your own body. However, fat transfers can only create a one to two cup-size increase. Implants will be more effective for more significant volume changes.
Saline vs. Silicone Implants
Both types of implants feature a silicone shell, but differ in filling. Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel that provides a natural feel. Saline implants use sterile salt water that provides a firmer feel. Dr. Chang will share the pros and cons of each type of implant and guide you to the best choice for your desired outcome. Both types of implants can produce fuller, shapely breasts.
Subglandular vs. Submuscular Placement
Implant placement is a critical step in creating beautiful outcomes. The location of the implant in relation to the pectoralis major (chest muscle) is what varies.
A subglandular implant placement is “over-the-muscle.” The implant is placed on top of the chest muscle and under the natural breast tissue. It has a slightly shorter recovery time and patients often report less discomfort since the chest muscle is not disturbed. This method is often preferred for natural-looking enhancements with larger implants.
Submuscular placement is “under-the-muscle.” In this method, the implant is placed underneath the chest muscle, in addition to being under the natural breast tissue. This provides more tissue coverage and creates smoother, more natural-looking results. It does have a longer recovery time, as the muscle will be affected.

Preparation
Dr. Chang utilizes a comprehensive approach to create elegant, lasting results. He will help you build a strong foundation for optimal results and faster, more successful healing. Maintaining a fit and active lifestyle before and after your treatment is very important to a safe surgery, smooth recovery, and lasting outcomes.(3) To best prepare the body, your plan may include adjustments, as necessary, to lifestyle, medications, diet, and daily activities and exercise.
Preparing your post-procedure logistics and recuperation space ahead of time will ease your recovery process. This may include arranging for time off work, having a trusted helper to drive and stay with you following your procedure, filling prescriptions ahead of time, and preparing your space to be calming and relaxing.
Procedure
Dr. Chang brings artistry and extreme precision to every procedure. Your outpatient treatment will be highly specific, based on your anatomy and implant selection. Your procedure will begin with a final consultation and review of your recovery procedures. You will then receive general anesthesia, so you will be asleep and comfortable during the treatment.
Implant Breast Augmentation
Dr. Chang will make a precise incision. There are two common incision types. The periareolar incision is located near the lower half of the areola so it will hide the scar. The inframammary incision is located under the breast, along the crease. Dr. Chang will tailor your incision type and location to the implants you have planned.
Next, he will carefully insert your implant. The two most common placement options are subglandular and submuscular. Subglandular, known as “over-the-muscle” places the implant under the breast tissue, but on top of the chest muscle. This placement is associated with shorter, easier recoveries, but can lead to rippling if you have thin breast tissue.
Submuscular, known as “under-the-muscle” places the implant partially or fully beneath the pectoralis major chest muscle. This creates softer, more natural results. It causes increased post-operative discomfort and a slightly longer adjustment period. Once your implant is in position, Dr. Chang will close incisions and dress the breasts. You will receive a compression band to stabilize your implants.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
The pre-procedure process will be the same as with implants. Following anesthesia, Dr. Chang will begin by performing liposuction at the donor site. He will next prepare and purify the fat tissue. He will then precisely inject the fat into the chest to create more volume. After the injection is complete, Dr. Chang will close and bandage the breasts and the liposuction site.
Typically, the entire augmentation process (for both implants and fat transfer) will take a few hours. This will vary based on your specific plan. Once general anesthesia has worn off and you are stable, you will continue your recovery in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Chang will support and monitor you closely through the whole process.
Recovery
Your recovery will vary based on your specific treatment. Dr. Chang will provide detailed recovery information, optimized to promote faster healing and lasting results. Initially after your procedure, swelling and discomfort are typical. Pain medication will help alleviate symptoms. By two to three weeks, you will notice a decrease in pain, swelling, and bruising. Most patients return to light activities at this time. Typically by four to six weeks, energy levels will have returned to normal and physical activities can be resumed with Dr. Chang’s approval.
Results
You will notice initial changes immediately after your procedure, but results will become more apparent as swelling declines over time. Breasts will settle fully into their new shape and size following treatment and full results will be visible after two and six months. Dr. Chang cares deeply about the longevity of your results and will work with you on how to manage and maintain your new silhouette for the years to come. Although breast implants are long-lasting, they are not lifetime devices. Most patients will require replacement or removal after 10-15 years, and Dr. Chang recommends regularly examining your implants.
Corresponding Procedures
You can achieve a balanced silhouette while reducing total recovery time by combining your breast augmentation with other procedures.
A breast lift is often integrated with breast augmentation to achieve comprehensive breast enhancement. Together, they improve volume, address sagging, and improve shape, position, and symmetry.
Body contouring procedures are also frequently performed with breast augmentations. Adding abdominal etching, tummy tucks, or liposuction can smooth the abdomen and remove sagging skin while your breast augmentation restores fullness and shape to the chest.
